The 4th Annual S.I.S. Awards was held recently at the Benjamin Hooks Library in Memphis, TN. The event was co-hosted by Walking Into A New Life, Inc. and Successful Single Moms Memphis. The S.I.S. Awards, which stands for Surviving in Silence, is an annual event to honor women in the community who have overcome adversities and statistics that are often associated with being a single mother and/or victim of abuse/assault. Each year, (5) survivors of abuse/assault, (5) single mothers and (1) organization is chosen.
Sadly, there is a perception that those who’ve been victimized and/or raising children on their own are also bound and continuously dependent upon public assistance, bruised, broken and poor in spirit. These women rose to the occasion, proving to themselves and others that they are NOT what they’ve been through. Their situations have made them better mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, advocates, co-workers, community organizers, community leaders and champions for change. They don’t do this work because they are looking for pay or accolades. The do it because there is someone, somewhere who had been through what they’ve been through. These women know and understand what it takes to not only survive, but to thrive. No matter how each of these women came into their various situations-divorces, death, abuse, assault or just having a heart for others, their stories are an example of strength and determination.
