With a beautiful, infectious smile and an even bigger heart to match, Angie Steele is a servant leader after God’s heart with a passion for youth. While many in the community know her excellent salon skills, great slogans & T-Shirts like ‘Go Be Great’ or events such as ‘You Can Sit with Us’, we’re excited to share information about her formation of Camp S.A.S.E. We welcome you to read more about the works of our latest blog series feature, Angie Steele.

How long have you been doing what you do? “In 2014, I started Camp S.A.S.E for girls. It was created to help girls in the area of confidence. I noticed that many girls didn’t know their worth, so I taught on self acceptance and self esteem. To make it fun, I also taught them how to actually do their hair and brought in experts to do their makeup, talk about hygiene, brought in exercise instructors to give them tips on caring for their bodies, and so much more. Girls should know how to properly get ready for interviews, dressing for jobs, and most of all how to love themselves.”

What types of services does your organization/agency/business provide? “My organization is simply a place where we try to meet the needs of our community in the area of kids. Right now, our S.A.S.E. camps have been one on one based since COVID-19 prevents us from meeting in large groups. We have done some camps through Zoom and that’s going well. However, I’ve moved more towards meeting the needs of tutoring kids for school. Many need the prep work for the next grade their entering, so I’m here to help. Home school tutoring is my new community service. We have a total of 6 students right now, and it’s growing.”

What made you decide to pursue this journey? “The Bible in Matthews 19:14 quotes Jesus and it says, “suffer not the little children to come into him, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” I’ve seen personally some traumatic events in my life centered around children and how those traumatic events affect their mind if not given attention. My heart’s desire is to see children prosper. After all, they will lead us one day. The Lord has blessed me with many talents and so I just want to impart something in a child without opportunity.”

What are some of the most gratifying parts of what you do? “One of the most gratifying parts of what I do is signing onto my Zoom class to read a story to my Kindergarten & 1st graders and my kids are waiting on me with smiles. Another is seeing a former student in public and they come hug me. Most of my S.A.S.E girls are working with their hands styling hair from basic skills I taught. That’s gratifying!”

What are some of the most disheartening things about what you do? “Many times, I have to listen to the stories of some of my campers. Some of them were bullied due to weight & size, abused in more than one way, or they dislike themselves because they don’t look like the next girl. That’s disheartening to hear!”

Tutoring wise, I’ve heard from parents through tears how someone told them their child was incapable of learning or is behind. These are just a few things that are hard to hear.”

Do you have any events coming up? “Events I had coming up have been canceled this year due to the COVID-19. I simply have found creative ways of keeping my camp going online and tutoring online as well.

As for my You Can Sit With Us yearly event, we will be giving awards out to community leaders soon. The people being awarded have gone out their way to spark their communities. They’re providing jobs, volunteering, and overall doing a good work.”

Do you have any needs that would help you better do what you do? With a smile, Angie says the following: “I’ve started an online reading program for children. If you would like to give school materials or help purchase a book to read to my Kindergarten & 1st grade class, that would be a blessing. Any monetary donations would go to create more resources to reach our children through technology.”

What main point(s) do you want the readers to take away from this publication? “The main point I want readers to get is when we do something for others, we do it unto the Lord. He is so interested in the needs of others, so he uses us (his children) to reach back. Suffer not anyone of (his children) to know his love through you.”
