Community Advocacy Summit 2010
This is WIANL’s very 1st community event. It was a mission come true to bring a number of advocates, programs, and community leaders in one place to educate attendees about domestic violence and the various available resources. We are very proud of the support we received as a new grassroots organization. It laid the foundation for many other educational and advocacy events and programs to come.
SIS Awards from 2011 through 2015
S.I.S. stands for Surviving In Silence. This annual celebration was hosted yearly and co-hosted with Successful Single Moms Memphis. We highlighted five domestic violence survivors and five single mothers, and we later included honoring a specific organization focused on DV. These women make it happen for themselves and their families, despite opposition. It was our way to lift them up and celebrate their bravery, tenacity, and resiliency.
Pamper & Support Day 2012-2020
Pamper and Support Day is our signature event for victims and survivors. Hosted 2 to 3 times a year, the event consists of a peer support group session, food, and two self care activities. Attendees receive a special self care goodie bag with sweet treats, notes of encouragement, and a variety of self care items specifically for them to enjoy. We’ve also included clothing, shoes, purses, and an array of household and hygiene items for their families.
WIANL Steppers Set 2013
The Unique Steppers of Memphis partnered with us to co-host Steppin’ Out Against Domestic Violence. The event provided a fun, classy, informative way to highlight the popular, longstanding art of Chicago Stepping, with other groups joining in to support our efforts and learn more about domestic abuse. It would be the 1st of three events of it’s kind for WIANL.
All White Steppers Affair –
House of Mtenzi/WIANL 2013
Co-hosted with House of Mtenzi, we incorporated a stepper’s flair theme to their yearly all white affair. Great food, music, fashion and of course, several local stepper’s groups were all on hand to demonstrate some dance moves, help us raise awareness about domestic abuse and share ways to get involved.
WIANL Stepper’s Set 2014
We were able to broaden the scope of our Stepper’s Set by including ballroom dancing, belly dancing, and Chicago stepping. We were even given mini classes between dance performances. It was an intimate gathering filled with lots of laughs, good music, and information about our cause.
Queen 4 A Day Hosted by Raheem Devaughn
Three time grammy nominated recording neo soul artist Raheem Devaughn is also the CEO of his own non-profit, Love Life Foundation. For each city he held a concert in 2015, he also hosted a Queen for A Day Pampering Event to uplift victims and survivors of domestic violence. When he came to Memphis, LLF chose our organization to support. The event included an array of spa services, catered brunch, meet, greet, and photos with Raheem, and tickets to his concert later that night.
2017 Sync 4 Your Life – Part 1
Dru’s Place is known for it’s drag shows, karaoke, and chill atmosphere. So, when one of our board members shared with the owner the desire to host a lip sync event, not only did they welcome us with space to host it, but several of their regular performers donated their time and talents. A good time for a good cause was had by all!
We had such a mutually great time before, we were able to host a Part 2 for our Sync for Your Life event. It was complete with drag show performances, karaoke, and lip syncing. With costume props, and an audience of supporters, we were able to provide educational information while having fun.
2019 Sync 4 Your Life
It was our CEO’s birthday. She chose to celebrate it by hosting our 3rd Sync for Your Life event at where else but Dru’s Place! She’s one who loves music and lip syncing, so seeing this event come into fruition and be so well received was a real joy for all of us at WIANL. It is always great to bring awareness and education whenever we can, and to do so while having fun is a bonus.
