You may know Jana Kramer from being a contestant on Dancing with the Stars. However, Jana is also the ex-wife of Michael Gambino. The beautiful and brave mother and survivor talks about her horrendous ordeal in an interview with People magazine. I encourage you to read it. As a result of his abuse against her, Gambino was found guilty of attempted murder in 2005 and set to prison. He was released in 2010 and committed suicide in 2012.

In the interview, Jana shares how she was afraid of being judged as one of the main reasons for not sharing her experiences sooner. It is a common fear among victims/survivors of abuse. In their minds, there is the fear of people looking at you and thinking you should have left sooner, or you must have done something to provoke the abuse. In reality, there are a number of reasons why victims/survivors do not just leave. It is just not always that simple. In addition, victim blaming is still a huge problem in our society. Abuse is about power and control.

We are proud of anyone who has the courage to come forward and share their story of survival, no matter when they choose to share it. It is always important to remember while there will be those who will judge, there will also be those who are inspired and encouraged. It is those individuals whose opinions matter most.
